Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through its agricultural projects, the Hubi & Vinciane Foundation aims to reduce poverty in its area of operation. Thanks to these projects, healthy and varied food is available locally.It also gives women the opportunity to become more autonomous and self-reliant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activities within the domain Agriculture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of 2010, agricultural projects have been integrated into our operations. Our agronomists provide structural training in the villages to grow crops, such as grains, tubers, legumes and vegetables, and keep chickens and goats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They teach local people – especially women and youth – how to get the most out of their piece of farmland, how to process the harvest into healthy meals, and how to package and sell the surplus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In agriculture, we support villages with community vegetable gardens<\/strong>, families with smaller gardens<\/strong>, and schools with school gardens<\/strong>. The banana project<\/strong> is also ongoing. Thanks to the Associations Villageoises d’Epargne et de Cr\u00e9dit (AVEC)<\/em>, women can take out microfinance <\/strong>and invest in self-employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also cooperate with the Sokounon training farm<\/strong>, where local farmers can always get technical support and advice from agronomists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Foundation also drills wells<\/strong>, constructs water reservoirs<\/strong>, and installs irrigation systems<\/strong> so that local people can grow crops all year round, even in the dry season. That way, there is never a shortage of fruits, vegetables, or grains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agricultural projects enable young people and women to provide themselves and their families with the necessary food and achieve financial independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of women and young farmers gratefully take advantage of the projects and support provided by our agricultural experts. Indirectly, our projects reach all villagers, up to 300,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Foundation, we invest in extensive community gardens for about 15 women each, and small gardens for one family. We have created over 180 gardens in the Tchaourou and N'Dali regions. Our two agronomists play a crucial role in this. They provide the women with the necessary technical support and explain when it is best to plant something and how to make the most of the gardens. They follow up regularly and can answer the women's questions very precisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the village of Kakara, Bibi Adam, pictured below with a smile, proudly poses with the harvested tomatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"My home garden has okra, tomatoes, and chili peppers. Whenever I want to prepare the sauce, I always have what I need at hand. I don't have to go to the market to spend at least 500 CFA francs for the sauce. The garden allows me to save some money. Sometimes, when I harvest a lot of vegetables, we eat some and sell the rest. The whole family feeds well, and we regularly eat vegetables as advised. I have had my garden since 2018, and peace of heart because life is more manageable.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another woman testifies that the benefits of the hut gardens are enormous. When we didn't have these gardens installed, every morning, we had to think about how to find money to make a modest sauce for the children to eat. With our hut gardens, we don't have to worry about that anymore. A little tomato and okra, and the sauce is ready. Moreover, there are fewer discussions between my husband and me because to prepare the sauce, I have gradually become independent of him. I don't necessarily expect him to give me money for it anymore.
The beneficiaries do not fail to underline the importance of the technical support of our Foundation's advisors. Thanks to them, they don't give up when things are difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the lack of water during the dry season is the women\u2019s major problem in maintaining their gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Farmer<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In a country like Benin, where many people have no means of subsistence other than agriculture, monitoring and adapting farming techniques to optimize harvests systematically is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Figures from Benin's Institut National de Statistiques et de D\u00e9mographie (INSTaD) <\/strong>and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) <\/strong>confirm that over 70% of Benin's population depend on agriculture for their income. The same statistics show that agriculture accounts for over 32% of gross domestic product (GDP). The Hubi & Vinciane Foundation has initiated the development of new, lesser-known production methods with local farmers through the Champs Ecoles Paysans (CEP) <\/strong>to increase agricultural productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Foundation's agronomists marked out a small area of the farmer\u2019s land for the CEP. Within this small area, they apply different techniques to the same crops and share their knowledge and experience with the farmer-owne and other farmers from surrounding plots. They compare not only the harvest itself but also the difficulties and consequences of the techniques applied. In this way, the farmers learn first-hand which methods are the most profitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, three villages in N'dali have already benefited from the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several rice seeding techniques were tested in the Smart Valley fields (another Foundation project), including direct seeding, broadcast seeding (a farmers' practice) and transplanting. The results of the new techniques were much better than what the farmers had always applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another village, our advisors experimented with sowing lentils in the RWHs. Here, too, the results were much better than with traditional techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We've been experimenting with new pest control methods as part of our vegetable garden project. Using natural processes, our agronomists eliminated over 90% of nematodes and kept crops healthy without pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Producing maize in the dry season in northern Benin in January is hard to believe when you know that there is only one rainy season between late May and late September. But it is possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience made in the new garden of the public elementary school of Bonsi in the village of Boko commune of N'Dali, allows us to affirm it. According to the school\u2019s director, Marius Amoussou<\/strong>, the students planted some corn seeds at the end of October and the beginning of November: \u201cWe irrigated the seeds and weeded them when necessary. Today, we are happy to present you with an entirely satisfactory result.\u201d<\/em> As shown in the photo below left, some corn plants have produced up to three ears of corn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fruits have kept the promise of the flowers. For Samadou Sidi<\/strong>, agricultural advisor at the Hubi et Vinciane Foundation who helps the school to cultivate their vegetable garden, \"the irrigation of the crops and the preparation of the soil with organic fertilizers (animal excrements) allowed us to obtain this result which can be replicated on large surfaces provided that there is water and that the crops are well irrigated and maintained\u201d<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maize production can be carried out all year round, regardless of the season. The three conditions to be respected are the presence of water, soil fertility, and good crop irrigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
