Sustainable Food Production for the Future<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aquaponics <\/strong>is an innovative and sustainable system combining growing vegetables with fish farming. This approach saves both space and water, perfectly aligning with our mission to contribute to healthy, environmentally friendly food production. We purchased five interconnected aquaponic systems from the South African company “La Pieus Aqua<\/strong>” and transported them to Parakou, Benin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Aquaonics\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through aquaponics, we aim to improve the local food supply by making fresh vegetables and fish more accessible. At the same time, we focus on efficient water use, which is essential in a country like Benin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five aquaponic systems have been installed at three locations: two at the training farm in Sokounon, two at the University of Parakou, and one at the headquarters of our Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n

Since the imported systems are too expensive for large-scale use, we are collaborating with the Laboratory for Research in Aquaculture and Aquatic Ecotoxicology <\/strong>(LaRAEAq) at the Faculty of Agronomy of the University of Parakou to develop a more affordable, locally-produced prototype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students and researchers are actively involved in refining the techniques and materials to make the systems more cost-effective, including experiments with a decoupled aquaponics system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results and Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2019, four master’s students have thoroughly tested the five interconnected systems for their final projects. Additionally, ten locally designed and produced aquaponic systems are now in use, and a decoupled system is being tested at the university. Another decoupled system has been installed at our incubation centre to train young agricultural entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The LaRAEAq <\/strong>has successfully tested and documented several crop cycles, including lettuce, amaranth, African eggplant, parsley, celery, and leeks. A technical guide will soon be available, making it easier for anyone interested to install and use aquaponics systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Foundation has made several attempts to find an effective and sustainable solution to malnutrition. In the course of this research, an integrated vegetable and fish production system was found, which had previously been used in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aquaponics <\/strong>is a system that links the cultivation of plants with the farming of fish. The fish faeces are used as fertilizer for the plants, which in turn act as a biological filter. Nutrients needed for plant growth are released by bacterial transformation of the waste products of macro-organisms (fish) into elements that can be assimilated by plants.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After successfully testing several vegetables, the next objective is the promotion of this integral and ecological small-scale system for the production of fish and vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaboration with Aquaponics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five systems have been installed, one at the CIAP (Centre D'Innov'Action de Parakou), two at the University of Parakou and two at the Sokounon farm. The latter two are partners of the Foundation. The farm of Sokounon is committed to making the production known, while at the University of Parakou several studies are carried out (feasibility, financial\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training of ambassadors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the period of installation of the aquaponics systems, theoretical and practical training sessions were attended by 17 ambassadors to ensure proper dissemination of information. They must be able to design, produce and monitor Aquaponics after the experts have left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results obtained with different vegetables<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several vegetables were tested in the aquaponic system to evaluate their usefulness under current climatic conditions. After three months, lettuce, amaranth, onion, African eggplant, parsley, celery and leek were found to give good results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fish<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a few months, the fish were ready to be eaten. Last month, 15 fish were harvested per system. These fish are fleshy and have a delicious taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A remarkable success that encourages us to continue the work.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
