The Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since healthy food and hygiene are inextricably linked, we also work with the Foundation on hygiene in the schools. And with clean water, there is hygiene. How else can you wash your hands regularly? How do you wash fruits and vegetables? How do you cook healthy meals? How do you wash the dishes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the water is also essential for the school vegetable gardens where fruits and vegetables are grown for the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the “Clean Water for Schools<\/strong>” project, we want to ensure that all the schools we work with have access to clean water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools that do not yet have clean water are counting on students and teachers to bring water to school. Every day, everyone must bring a container with water. That water is not always pure. Indeed, in the absence of wells, they have to get water from rivers or pools. Nevertheless, they have no choice but to use that water for drinking, washing hands and cooking in the school canteens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also impossible to establish vegetable gardens in those schools, where fruits and vegetables can be grown for students’ meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So constructing a well <\/strong>means a world of difference for the schools. From now on, students can drink pure water, there is water to wash hands and flush toilets, and they can plant a vegetable garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A committee of teachers, parents, and local representatives is responsible for maintaining and managing the well. Indeed, villagers can also use the well. They pay a small fee, which is set aside for possible repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results and Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the investments of various partners, the Foundation has already provided some fifteen elementary schools <\/strong>with clean water. In total, just over 60% of the hundred or so elementary schools we work with now have their well.<\/p>\n\n\n

We will be able to construct six more wells by 2024, funded by the Rotary Foundation’s Global Grant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We dream that all our partner schools will eventually have access to clean water and, by extension, the surrounding communities as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You cannot live without clean water. Unfortunately, many Beninese people still do not have access to clean drinking water today. It is therefore challenging, if not impossible, for them to practice the necessary hygiene. This lack of hygiene leads to illnesses and health problems such as diarrhoea and even typhoid fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Foundation has thus given top priority to the installation of wells and essential sanitary and hygienic equipment in the fifty schools it cooperates with, in the Borgou region.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thanks in part to the support of the Foundation, some 30 schools already have wells with drinking water. It is time now to look into the rest of the schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These wells not only make a big difference for the students and teachers, but also for the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. After all, they too can make use of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Wells in schools<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Access to clean water is a profound change for schools. Teachers and students no longer have to bring their own water. There is always clean water in the handwashing systems. The canteen can prepare the food with clean water. Toilets can be cleaned. And there is enough water for the school vegetable garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For the villagers, too, the availability of drinking water represents a significant improvement: they can wash, cook hygienically, and they can even produce food to sell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So many things that were not possible before. In schools that do not yet have access to drinking water, teachers and students bring their own water. Teachers tie a 25-litre container to the back of their motorcycles; students bring 0.5 or 1-litre bottles with them. This is often too little, especially in times of drought, and especially for children who cannot go home in the afternoon because they live too far away (5 to 7 km on foot).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There is not enough water to drink, let alone to wash their hands. Besides, students often bring polluted water from the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The installation of a well costs about 7000 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sanitary blocks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not all schools dispose of toilets. And even if they do, the number of toilets is often too low, considering the number of students and teachers. Today they have on average three toilets for every three hundred people. In schools that do not have access to a well, it is also impossible for staff to keep the toilets clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The installation of a toilet block with three toilets costs about 1,000 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Handwashing systems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To wash their hands, schools use tippy taps, handwashing systems made from recycled materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The installation of a tippy tap costs about 20 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Awareness-raising actions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Foundation is investing not only in facilities but also in hygiene awareness campaigns. In each school, ambassadors are trained to, under the supervision of a teacher, convince their classmates of the importance of good hygiene. They explain the importance of regular handwashing with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before eating. They also show why it is crucial to be very careful with food and that flies, and cockroaches can transmit diseases. They use posters, songs, poems, and videos. The ambassadors regularly repeat all these actions. The effect is gradually visible. In schools that have water, students wash their hands much more spontaneously. But there is still a lot of work to be done, especially in schools where no wells have yet been installed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
