The Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beninese government provides school meals for students, but these meals often need more vegetables and fruits, making them unbalanced. To improve this, the Foundation is establishing school gardens at partner schools. This way, students and teachers can easily access fresh fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is to ensure that school meals include vegetables and fruits, allowing students to enjoy a healthy, balanced meal. At the same time, they learn practical skills in growing their own fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In each school, a teacher is assigned responsibility for the school garden, with help from older students who assist with maintenance. Our agricultural advisors provide active support, from setting up planting beds through all stages of production. The students regularly water the plants, using water from wells we are gradually installing in these schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local food vendors also purchase vegetables from the school gardens ; any surplus is sold to teachers. The proceeds are reinvested in buying new seeds and plants, ensuring continuity in production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results and Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the school gardens, student meals are now much more balanced. Many students also apply the cultivation methods they learn at school in their homes, becoming more familiar with eating fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, we have established a garden in a quarter of our 111 partner schools. However, only some schools (13) have wells, essential for maintaining the gardens. Fencing is also important to keep animals out, so the gardens don\u2019t have to be replanted at the start of each school year. There\u2019s still work to equip all schools with wells and fully functional school gardens!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Producing maize in the dry season in northern Benin in January is hard to believe when you know that there is only one rainy season between late May and late September. But it is possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The experience made in the new garden of the public elementary school of Bonsi in the village of Boko commune of N'Dali, allows us to affirm it. According to the school\u2019s director, Marius Amoussou<\/strong>, the students planted some corn seeds at the end of October and the beginning of November: \u201cWe irrigated the seeds and weeded them when necessary. Today, we are happy to present you with an entirely satisfactory result.\u201d<\/em> As shown in the photo below left, some corn plants have produced up to three ears of corn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The fruits have kept the promise of the flowers. For Samadou Sidi<\/strong>, agricultural advisor at the Hubi et Vinciane Foundation who helps the school to cultivate their vegetable garden, \"the irrigation of the crops and the preparation of the soil with organic fertilizers (animal excrements) allowed us to obtain this result which can be replicated on large surfaces provided that there is water and that the crops are well irrigated and maintained\u201d<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Maize production can be carried out all year round, regardless of the season. The three conditions to be respected are the presence of water, soil fertility, and good crop irrigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Since 1985 Benin celebrates the national 'Arbor day' <\/strong>every year on June 1st. As a foundation, we do not let this day pass by unnoticed. This year, the local team launched an afforestation campaign together with the primary school of Bonsi in the municipality of N'Dali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Interesting to know: on the national Arbor Day, people are invited to plant or take care of trees. The initiative for this day arose in 1872 when J. Sterling Morton and Robert Furnas, respectively secretary and governor of the state of Nebraska, called upon the pioneers to remedy the shortage of trees by planting as many as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Many countries have the 'tree festival' or Arbor Day, which celebrates both the arrival of spring and nature. Local authorities use it to raise awareness and encourage people to fight desertification by planting trees. It is also for this reason that the Foundation sets up every year on June 1 an activity in favor of the recovery of ground vegetation. This year, we went to the primary school of Bonsi, one of the schools with which we work, to plant new trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Five young mango trees and five young gmelina trees were planted in the primary school. Both pupils and staff were present. And each tree got its own name: the success tree, the happiness tree, the peace tree, the love tree etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The local team specifically chose the Bonsi primary school because there was not a single tree in the extensive courtyard. The trees that have now been planted will not only provide shade, but also fruit within a few years. Everyone involved in the activity is aware that the trees will have to be well cared for. To protect them from animals, fences will be erected around them. And the staff and pupils will water the trees regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Marius Amoussou, the director of the school, promises that he will strictly follow the care of the trees. Afforestation is very important.
