The Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The target group of our fight against acute malnutrition consists of children between 6 and 59 months (i.e., under six years of age) in Parakou, N’dali and Tchaourou in Borgou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acute malnutrition rate there was very high, as also mentioned in Unicef’s report, but has decreased significantly year after year thanks to the efficient approach of our malnutrition program. Our early detection strategy, combined with appropriate treatment, is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our ultimate ambition is that all children in our region are born and grow up in good health. And because young children are easily susceptible to other diseases, it is essential to detect and treat any malnutrition (and debilitation) at an early stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year, our 15 specially trained social assistants launch a large-scale screening campaign. They go door to door and examine more than 12,000 children. Initially, they measure arm or brachial circumference. Depending on those results, they also perform other measurements to determine whether a child is malnourished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After each screening, severely malnourished children are referred to partner hospitals and health centres, depending on the severity of malnutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moderately malnourished children are cared for in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is implemented in 47 villages in N’Dali commune and the larger town of Kassouala in Tchaourou commune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Foundation is also active in 17 other villages, with groups of Femmes Ambassadrices de Nutrition doing screenings of malnourished children and conducting cooking workshops every three months for mothers on balanced nutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results and Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With more than 12,000 children screened during each campaign, we reach nearly 7,000 families. In the 48 villages where we are very intensively engaged with this project, the malnutrition rate has decreased from 11.8% in 2019 to 1.5% in 2023, a spectacular result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our next challenge is to train and empower even more villagers to educate, screen and – if necessary – initiate initial treatment themselves. Then, we can share our experience and apply our expertise to other villages and regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Current situation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In 2015, the Hubi & Vinciane Foundation launched the malnutrition project with two partner hospitals Saint-Jean-de-Dieu<\/strong> in Boko and Saint-Martin<\/strong> in Papan\u00e9. The Foundation\u2019s nutritionist leads this project. Once a year, he and a team of 13 social workers examine all children under five years of age in the villages of the intervention zone. Initially, the project involved 47 villages in N'Dali. The project's intervention area has been extended to Tchaourou with 16 other towns for he past year. Parents come with their young children to a collection point where they are systematically screened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An initial measurement in 2015 revealed that 12% of children under 5 were severely malnourished. Today, that percentage has been reduced to 0.35%. Severely malnourished children are referred to hospitals or health centers for intensive treatment. Moderately malnourished children receive additional follow-up at home. The screening takes about one month and is only one part of the project. During the rest of the year, the nutritionist and the social workers organize preventive awareness campaigns on healthy eating. Through cooking workshops, they teach, among other things, how to make the daily diet more balanced and healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The annual screening campaign in the 47 villages of N'Dali took place from November 22 to December 22, 2022. Iss\u00e9r\u00e9 Atcha<\/strong>, in charge of project monitoring and evaluation, presented a brief report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Results of the screening campaign for malnutrition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ethical consideration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Participation in this campaign is voluntary, and no household is obliged to participate in any way. Field data collection is preceded by informed written or verbal consent from eligible individuals in each family. The facilitator cannot divulge any information collected under the pretext of being excluded. The data collected is processed collectively and anonymously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Household characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • 6021 households<\/strong> were surveyed. The average household size is 8.49 members, at least 2 of whom are children under 59 months of age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 98.89% of households<\/strong> have access to a source of drinking water, compared to 1.01% who continue to consume water from the marshes\/rivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Insalubrity and waste management are a challenge. 91.13% of households<\/strong> throw household waste in wild dumps, further polluting the environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 72.55% of households <\/strong>do not have a restroom. Among them, 94.83% defecate in the open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      90.57% of children<\/strong> have a birth certificate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Nutritional status of screened children<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      11,613 children<\/strong> aged 6-59 months were screened during this campaign, 5847 boys and 5766 girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Most children have good nutritional status. Out of 100 children screened, 98 are nutritionally healthy, and two are sick. The overall malnutrition rate is 1.42%<\/strong> in the 47 villages of N'Dali. This rate is significantly lower than the 2021 rate of 2.52% in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Moderate acute malnutrition is the most frequent and affects nearly 10 (1.07%) children out of 1000<\/strong>. Cases of severe acute malnutrition are becoming increasingly rare and affect less than 4 (0.35%) children out of 1000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We are pleased to note that overall, the level of malnutrition (moderate and severe together) gradually decreases. From a rate of 11.78% in 2019<\/strong>, we have gone to 2.89% in 2020<\/strong> and 1.42% in 2022<\/strong>. In intervals of 4 years of intervention, the malnutrition rate has decreased by more than 10.36 points. Nevertheless, follow-up and preventive actions by the nutritionist and social workers are necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
