The Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Benin, unfortunately, children are often born with deformed feet or legs that prevent them from walking. What’s more, their families don’t have the means to pay for the necessary hospital treatment. In addition, health centres often lack qualified personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hubi & Vinciane Foundation wants to help these children by organizing orthopedic missions by Belgian surgeons in collaboration with the Saint-Jean de Dieu hospital in Boko.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Target Group<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By organizing orthopedic missions, the Foundation aims not only to give young children the chance to walk normally, but also to strengthen the skills of Benin’s medical teams by sharing its knowledge with Belgian doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first mission took place in 2021. Since then, a group of Belgian surgeons travels to Benin once a year for a week to carry out operations with their Beninese colleagues. Beforehand, they examine the various cases sent to them and make an initial selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On site, they then examine dozens of children who come to Boko or Papan\u00e9 from all over Benin. They try to operate on as many children as possible, but unfortunately, for some of them, the operation comes too late. Their malformation is already too advanced to be treated. So it’s clear that more frequent missions would be ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results and Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During two orthopedic missions to Boko, nearly twenty children were operated on each time, after more than a hundred consultations. During a general surgery mission in Papan\u00e9, thirty-five operations were carried out after more than four hundred (!) consultations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of consultations shows the importance of the needs of this vulnerable population.
During numerous consultations, the doctors noted that there is also a great need for other specializations, such as pediatric neurology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From November 8 to 14, 2023, Tom Mulier<\/strong> and Bart Van Poppel<\/strong>, orthopaedic surgeons at the Heilig Hart Hospital in Leuven, were accompanied by fellow doctors Dr Esteves<\/strong> and Dr Vanderdonckt<\/strong> (anaesthetists) to assist the team of doctors at the Saint-Jean-de-Dieu Hospital in Boko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In just a few days, the doctors performed 26 orthopaedic surgery operations. The patients were children from different regions of Benin. They had foot or leg deformities that prevented them from walking. Thanks to the orthopaedic mission, many children were treated free of charge in the hope that they could walk normally like other children, enjoy better health and flourish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Yves Aloukoutou<\/strong>, who attended all the consultations and operations, greatly appreciates this initiative. For him, the children deserve to be able to walk normally. \"The mission went well. There were some very complex cases, but by pooling our experience and knowledge, we can do something for these children.\" For him, it's also important that treatment is virtually free. \"The parents of some of the children we called for screening couldn't afford to pay for the trip.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also regrets having to disappoint some people. \"Some people come to us with pathologies that could and should have been treated two or three years ago. Today, they are often at too advanced a stage for us to be able to help them. All we can do for these children is try to alleviate the problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People are delighted with the mission. They regularly ask about the program and the dates of future missions because they have relatives or acquaintances they'd like to see operated on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 27 November to 5 December 2021, a team of specialists from Heilig Hart hospital in Leuven went on a mission to Benin. In the Saint Jean de Dieu hospital in Boko, in the Borgou region, they operated on children with serious malformations and taught the local medical team specific skills and techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team consisted of five people: Dr Tom Mulier<\/strong> and Dr Bart Van Poppel<\/strong>, orthopaedic surgeons, Dr Dirk Van der Donckt<\/strong> and Dr Melissa Esteves<\/strong>, anaesthetists, and Tatiana Lurquin<\/strong>, deputy head and post-operative nurse. They worked together with Dr Yves Aloukoutou, head of surgery and the local team of anaesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists, and bandage makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparing for the mission<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The preparation for the mission started several months before the arrival of the Belgian team. More than 120 children from the surrounding villages came to the hospital for a free consultation and initial screening. The x-ray photos and the relevant information from the various cases were sent to Belgium. After consultation via video conference between the Belgian and the Benin team, 46 children were finally retained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consultations<\/strong>
Of the 46 children, 21 were selected and scheduled for surgery. After a pre-operative assessment and a pre-anaesthesia check, 19 children were eligible for surgery. Without the financial intervention of the mission, surgery for these children would not be feasible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interventions<\/strong>
In the end, the team was able to operate on 17 children. Some of them had deformities of both limbs so that a total of 20 operations were required. Although there were several power cuts and no parameters on the breathing machine - which made the doctors' work difficult - the interventions themselves went without any significant problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cooperation between both teams was very good and a lot of relevant knowledge was exchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post-operative follow-up also went very smoothly. All patients were thoroughly checked on the last day and precise instructions and advice were given for follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aftercare<\/strong>
The children will have to stay in hospital for a total of six weeks to have the bandages and plaster changed regularly. Still some families can not afford the operation itself and the aftercare with the long stay in the hospital. Our Foundation will thus provide the necessary resources so that all children can receive proper aftercare in the hospital. The risk of infection is very high if they go home too soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cFor years, I had wanted to operate on children in Africa with stature abnormalities of the legs and feet. Now I had the opportunity to go to Benin in Africa on behalf of the Hubi & Vinciane Foundation. We quickly put together a very enthusiastic team consisting of two orthopaedists, two anaesthetists and one plaster nurse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In Benin, we found very poignant cases including children with extreme club feet and Blount's disease. In the end, we were able to operate on 17 children, some of them bilaterally. What I remember from the trip is the extreme poverty in the region. And that despite this, the people, often beautifully dressed, radiate a certain pride and do not immediately look unhappy. Perhaps that is only the 'outside'.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In any case, the children we operated on were very tough. Sometimes you almost forgot that you were dealing with children three to seven years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The organisation was perfectly done by Hubi & Vinciane. The local team also helped us a lot - especially me since I don't speak a word of French\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I am convinced that such missions are necessary, and I would like to repeat them in the future. But I would like to combine them with the training of local orthopaedists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
