The Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Saint-Jean de Dieu Hospital in Boko<\/strong>, Benin, has been our important partner since we began collaborating in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We provide training for the staff and organize missions with Belgian doctors. We also support internships for medical and nursing students. Additionally, we invest in infrastructure, including a guesthouse, the pediatric ward, and solar panels. Despite all these efforts, there remains a need for additional support for specific initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital is known for the quality of care in paediatrics and maternity. This reputation has only strengthened since Dr. Morelle Capochichi<\/strong> became the medical director. Together with two other gynaecologists, she focuses on prenatal care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has doubled the number of patients in the maternity ward. Many people now come to Saint-Jean de Dieu for deliveries with complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the rising demand, the situation in the maternity ward is problematic. In 2023, there was an average of 45 patients per day but only 22 beds. This means that some mothers and their babies are placed in other departments, hallways, or even outside, which is unsustainable. That\u2019s why we are starting construction on a new maternity ward as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new maternity ward will provide more space for patients and improve the quality of care. For doctors and nurses, the new facility will also offer better working conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new maternity clinic will have 100 beds. Pregnant women and women with gynaecological issues will be able to receive care here. Neonatology and gynaecological surgery will also move to the new building. In addition to the building itself, the latest medical equipment must be purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note<\/strong>: The total construction cost for a new maternity ward is currently estimated at 532,000 euros. Work began in June 2025 and is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2027. We still need 93,000 euros for the construction of the neonatal unit and the pavilion. As soon as we can raise this additional amount, we will begin these projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results and Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

The province of West Flanders<\/strong> is funding a significant part of the construction work, and several other loyal partners are also willing to sponsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, more than this is needed: an additional 93,000 euros is required to complete the new maternity ward. The search for funding is in full swing and every euro counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We have been working in close collaboration with the Saint-Jean-de-Dieu hospital in Boko for almost 40 years. Various services are offered to patients, including internal medecine, paediatrics, imaging, surgery and gynecology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The latter service is bursting at the seams. In four years, the number of patients has doubled, going from 1229 to 2447, and consultations from 2500 to 5500. The number of hospitalizations has gone from 1490 to 3862. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Today, the service employs two gynecologists, three general practitioners, three qualified sage-femmes, six nurses, and eight health professionals. There is a delivery room with three tables, a workroom with two tables, an emergency room, two infirmaries with six beds each, and two consultation rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On average, 35 women are hospitalized simultaneously, although there are only 22 beds. This means that women must lie on beds in the hallway or outside under a shelter. The staff must deal with urgent matters - women go to hospitals only for difficult deliveries and not for regular deliveries  - and look for beds in other services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Of course, this cannot continue. That is why, with the owner of the hospital (the Archdiocese of Parakou) and based on the pledge of the hospital's management,we had the idea of building a new department with a capacity of 100 beds, which would accommodate obstetrics, neonatology, and gynecological surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The budget is 120 000 euro. The work will begin this year if we can mobilize the funding in time.     I am 43 years old, married Tchassaman and mother of 5 children including 1 boy of 17 years old and 4 girls. After my Baccalaureate in 1998 in Bohicon, I continued my studies in the Faculty of Medicine in Calavi thanks to the State scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    After 7 years of training I graduated as a general practitioner. I obtained my first position as a general practitioner on January 8, 2007 in Boko where I served for 5 years before continuing my studies for the gynaecological-obstetrics specialty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I did 4 years of training including 3 years in Cotonou and one year in Belgium before coming back to serve again in Boko but this time as a gynaecologist doctor from 2017 until today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For my work I leave home at 7 o'clock and in 45 minutes I am in Boko. I start my working day with visits to the hospital wards and then I go to the consultations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I do an average of 200 prenatal visits per month with an average of 90 caesarean sections. I like my job and I devote most of my time to it. Although the regular working time is 8 hours a day because we are a religious denomination, I work between 10 and 11 hours depending on the emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The majority of caesarean sections are improvised because patients present late due to a lack of means to cope with the medication. We sometimes have scheduled interventions as in the case below. This is a uterine myoma. The lady was successfully operated on and is in perfect health today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I'll be home around 7:00 to do some housework. In this other area, I also have employees who are a nourishing mother who looks after the children while I am away and a young girl who looks after the little one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
