The Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Water is life,” said Antoine de Saint-Exup\u00e9ry. Yet, many health centers in Benin, including those in our operational area, operate without potable water. Electricity is another major issue, with several centres still lacking power. Good healthcare is impossible without clean water and electricity. Therefore, the Hubi & Vinciane Foundation invests in water and electricity supplies for various health centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Foundation aims to improve the healthcare quality by providing water and electricity to medical centres. Additionally, nearby residents can benefit from the water supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We install wells with solar-powered pumps and water towers with two tanks for storage. One tank supplies water for the medical centre\u2019s various needs. The other tank serves the community, offering water for a small fee. These fees are entirely saved for the maintenance of the installation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the future, we plan to install solar panels on buildings to ensure a constant energy supply for the centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results and Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four out of twenty health centres in our area have a well with a water tower and two tanks. Solar panel installations are only on the roofs of the Saint-Jean-de-Dieu hospital in Boko, providing enough energy for five out of eight departments. We are actively seeking funding to also equip the medical centres with green energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key partners in this project include the King Baudouin Foundation<\/strong> (Water) and Energy Assistance<\/strong>, a non-profit organization founded by ENGIE Group<\/strong> employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy Assistance<\/strong> was created in Belgium in 2001 by employees of the ENGIE Group (then Tractebel, Electrabel, and Fabricom).Today, Energy Assistance brings together active and retired volunteers from the energy sector of the ENGIE Group and Belgian network managers. Together, they put their knowledge, expertise, and hard work into the service of humanitarian projects for communities with little or no access to energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were pleased to learn that Energy Assistance had chosen one of our hospitals to provide a complete solar panel installation free of charge. The hospital was constantly experiencing power outages, which affected doctors and patients. Corona delayed the team's departure several times, but it finally occurred in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve, Sarah, Jean-Marie, and Vincent worked from September 17 to October 1 to reinforce the power supply of the Boko hospital by installing solar photovoltaic panels and powerful batteries. Thanks to this operation, the power supply of the pediatric department, the maternity ward, and the laboratory is now assured. In case of a power failure on the regular grid, the three departments can use the solar energy stored in the batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Team leader Steve gives details about their work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"We did the installations with so-called UPS systems, photovoltaic panels, and batteries. The building was not so complicated, but it required a certain rigor. The most important thing was distinguishing between the loads and the energy demands. According to the study by our engineers in Belgium, the equipment and materials installed here can last up to 12 years in perfect autonomy. The technology of the batteries allows it. These batteries are of good quality and are renowned in Europe for their reliability. We hope they will last as long here. All the installations have been tested, and we are happy that everything works well.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cooperation with the local hospital technicians went very well. They helped us with the installation. They are very willing to learn in all humility, and we appreciate that.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mission was fantastic. We were very impressed by the kindness and warmth of the Beninese people and the laughter of the many children we met.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
