Due to a lack of training and professionalization among farmers, the sector needs to catch up in innovation. As a result, farmers miss many opportunities and struggle to maintain financial stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Foundation collaborates with the training centre at the Sokounon farm in Parakou to change this. At Sokounon, young people can receive training on innovative and environmentally friendly livestock and vegetable farming techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-orange-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-2 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By providing the necessary professional training, we aim to enable young male and female farmers to apply innovative techniques, making their efforts more profitable and improving their financial stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-orange-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Project Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sokounon farm is an experimental and educational farm spanning 37 hectares, managed by the French congregation &#8216;Fr\u00e8res Missionnaires de la Campagne&#8217;. The centre has an excellent reputation. Every year, dozens of young people receive training on growing, preserving, and processing various crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Foundation has already made several significant investments in Sokounon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Construction of rabbit, goat, pig, and chicken pens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Construction of a warehouse and store<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renovation of dormitories for students and trainers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installation of a modern irrigation system, including a water tower for the vegetable garden and a banana plantation of over one hectare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/hubi-vinciane.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Landbouw_4-1-1_Sokounon_11_1200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31082\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hubi-vinciane.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Landbouw_4-1-1_Sokounon_11_1200.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/hubi-vinciane.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Landbouw_4-1-1_Sokounon_11_1200-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hubi-vinciane.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Landbouw_4-1-1_Sokounon_11_1200-768x347.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-orange-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Results and Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 50 young farmers have completed a two-year training program at Sokounon. Half of them now run their farms across Benin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to new equipment and infrastructure investments, Sokounon also serves as a lab for new applications. It contains more than 80% carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, etc.). It is, therefore, a high-energy food.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In the Beninese tradition, honey is mainly known as a medicine. People use it for its healing power in case of wounds. They use it to bring down fever and to facilitate dentition in infants (applying honey on the gums). <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Honey is also known for its use in the cosmetics industry, for example in ointments and bath soaps. Besides, honey is used as an additive to produce the sweet taste as a substitute for sugar in many meals such as porridge.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Because of its multiple uses, honey consumption is high in Benin. Until a few years ago, honey was only harvested from natural honeycombs in the woods. Bees were considered wild animals. Honey was hence a rather rare thing\u2026 Today, scientific progress in agronomy and beekeeping has made it possible to harvest much more honey. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>The Sokounon farm<\/strong> is an excellent example of this. Apiculture, the production of honey and the breeding of bees, has become one of the flagship activities of the farm. It not only satisfies the population's demand for honey by providing them with better quality honey but also increases the farm's turnover.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The SOKOUNON farm, in collaboration with the Hubi and Vinciane Foundation, has invested heavily in the construction of beehives to increase production. In addition, Professors <strong>Dr Rony Swennen<\/strong> and <strong>Dr Seppe Deckers<\/strong> from the University of KU Leuven also brought their skills and experience in the field of beekeeping during a working visit. With their support, the production per hive was increased significantly: from 4 to 8 litres per hive. Also, several pieces of equipment were made available to the farm for the development of the beekeeping sector.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Finally, since 2015, each year, more than 80 people (men and women) are trained in beekeeping at the Sokounon farm. It differs from one ethnic group to another and from one region to another.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Food is also strongly influenced by the main activities of an ethnic group. In the northern part of Benin, for example, where agro-pastoral activities are predominant (agriculture and livestock farming), the consumption of foods of animal origin such as cow's milk is rooted in dietary habits. This population usually consumes fresh milk, cheese and some other milk-based products such as yoghurt and powdered milk.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>The agro-pastoral farm of SOKOUNON<\/strong> contributes to the improvement of the population's diet in terms of consumption of dairy products. Thanks to its dairy goat breeding programme, it can produce yoghurt and make it available to the community.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In general, animal milk is the only food that contains almost all the nutrients. It is also recognized as the primary source of calcium. Goat's milk, in particular, provides fewer carbohydrates, fats and growth factors, making it closer to human milk and more suitable for human consumption than cow's milk.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The transformation of milk into yoghurt is a process that improves the nutritional and organoleptic quality of the milk. The fermentation that takes place during the production of yoghurt increases the content of certain nutrients (the B-complex vitamins) and the bioavailability of others.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The farm implements various strategies for the development and visibility of the dairy goat breeding industry. Every year, the farm welcomes about forty trainees from high schools and other training centres for a series of practical training courses in the various domains developed on the farm.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The consumption of goat's milk is gradually becoming part of the population's diet.
