The maternity ward of the Saint-Jean-de-Dieu Hospital in Boko \u2013 for years the key point of reference for high-quality mother and child care under the leadership of gynaecologist and medical director Morelle Capochichi<\/strong> \u2013 has long been bursting at the seams. The hospital\u2019s reputation attracts dozens of mothers every day for prenatal follow-up and specialised support for high-risk deliveries. But with an average of 45 patients per day across only 22 beds, it was becoming increasingly challenging to accommodate everyone with dignity. Too often, patients ended up on mattresses in the corridors or even outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, this will soon change. With the construction of a new, spacious maternity ward, capacity will increase to 45 beds<\/strong>, supplemented by 12 neonatology beds<\/strong> and two operating theatres<\/strong>. This represents a huge step forward in terms of quality, comfort and safety. The maternity ward in Boko is thus evolving into a vital reference centre \u2013 one of the largest in all of Benin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparatory works began in February 2025; since July, the site has been buzzing with activity. While one team worked on the masonry, another produced earth bricks and anchors on-site. The result is impressive: all masonry work has been completed, and the roof will be installed before the end of December. The opening is scheduled for the end of 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the financial side as well, many shoulders are supporting this project. The hospital is covering 40% of the costs. Thanks to the participants of the Corrida and the support of the Province of West Flanders, our Foundation can also contribute 40%. For the remaining portion, we continue to seek additional funding actively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, we are \u2013 quite literally \u2013 building better care for mothers and children in Boko.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
