Thanks to an exceptional donation from the company Kuehne + Nagel, the Hubi & Vinciane Foundation recently succeeded in shipping twenty ultra-low temperature freezers to Benin. These are high-quality professional freezers capable of reaching temperatures as low as -86°C and widely used in hospitals, research centers and pharmaceutical laboratories around the world.

The units were distributed among the hospitals of Boko, Papané and Banikoara, the CHUD hospital in Parakou, the Parakou blood bank and the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Parakou. For the university in particular, this donation represents a major step forward: five laboratories were equipped with highly valuable and costly equipment that had previously been out of reach.
Preserving Vital Samples
Ultra-low temperature freezers are far more than ordinary freezers. The MDF-DU702VH-PE VIP ECO ULY model was specifically designed for the long-term storage of highly sensitive biological and pharmaceutical materials.
These units are used to preserve blood and tissue samples, DNA and RNA material, cell cultures, vaccines, bacteria, viruses and medical reagents. Such materials are extremely temperature-sensitive and can rapidly degrade if not stored under proper conditions.
A standard freezer operating around -20°C is insufficient for this purpose. At temperatures near -86°C, chemical reactions and biological degradation processes are almost completely halted. As a result, genetic material, proteins and cells remain stable and usable for much longer periods in research, diagnostics and medical treatments.
Essential for Hospitals and Research
These freezers play a crucial role in scientific research, clinical analysis and pharmaceutical development. They make it possible to store samples safely and reliably over long periods, which is essential for high-quality healthcare and reproducible scientific research.
For the Parakou blood bank and the hospitals involved, this means improved capacity to preserve medical samples under optimal conditions. For the university, the donation opens new opportunities for teaching and research within the laboratories of the Faculty of Agriculture.
High-Tech Equipment
These professional freezers stand out because of their advanced technology. They maintain extremely stable temperatures, even when the door is opened, and feature extensive alarm and monitoring systems that immediately detect malfunctions or power failures.
The reliability of such equipment is invaluable. In research environments, stored samples often represent years of work and major investments. A freezer failure can have serious consequences for scientific research and medical analysis.
A Partnership with Lasting Impact
Through this donation, Kuehne + Nagel is making a highly valuable contribution to healthcare and scientific research in northern Benin. Thanks to the efforts of the Hubi & Vinciane Foundation and the support of WeMakeHope, the equipment could be shipped safely and delivered where the need was greatest.
The impact of this collaboration will be felt for many years to come — in hospitals, laboratories and university campuses where researchers, students and healthcare professionals now have access to technology that was previously barely accessible.
