Healthy Nutrition

Malnutritie

Did you know that malnutrition is one of the leading causes of child mortality in Benin? According to UNICEF, no less than 45% of deaths among children under the age of five are due to malnutrition. This is a higher percentage than in the rest of West Africa.

Moreover, the number of adults with diabetes and hypertension is rising. These are statistics we cannot ignore. Our mission is clear: to combat child mortality caused by malnutrition and to curb the rise of diabetes and hypertension.

We focus on the most vulnerable: children under the age of six, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.

Since 2017, we have worked in the Borgou region with targeted projects.

What exactly do we do?

  1. Screening and Treatment
We organize screening campaigns each year and conduct home visits in more than 64 villages. We identify children with acute malnutrition and immediately provide them with the necessary help. This gives them a renewed chance at a healthy future.
  2. Nutritional Education
Families learn how to prepare nutritious and affordable meals using local products. Our workshops and culinary demonstrations make healthy eating tangible and achievable.
  3. Prevention of Chronic Diseases
Since 2022, we have expanded our mission to include the fight against diabetes and hypertension. We organize screening campaigns and collaborate with local support groups. These groups play a crucial role in raising awareness and referring community members for further care.

Thanks to your support, we have already achieved a great deal:

  • Reduction in Child Malnutrition: The rate of acute malnutrition dropped from 11.75% to 1.42% in just five years.
  • Broad Reach: Each year, we screen an average of 10,000 children in more than 5,000 households.
  • Healthcare: Over 1,000 people have been screened for diabetes and hypertension, with direct assistance provided to at-risk patients.
  • Strong Communities: More than 60 support groups are making a difference in their villages by raising health awareness.

With your support, we can save even more lives. Please help us reduce child mortality and life-threatening diseases in Benin.

Together, we can build a world without hunger and with healthy, resilient communities.
