The corona pandemic made it almost impossible to organise fundraising activities in 2021. However, thanks to our partners and many loyal sponsors, we raised 311,500 euros. As usual, we were able to keep the management costs in Belgium very low (less than 3%). We invested the rest directly in our projects in Benin.
The income for 2021 consisted of 311,500 euros in donations and a legacy of 306,774 euros. Of these donations, 96,200 euros came from our partners Materialise, the Gillès Foundation, the Paula Vandewatering Fund, and the Elisabeth and Amélie Fund, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation, and the non-profit organisation Johanna Bode. We received 80,000 euros from the public authorities. A toutes jambes pour le Bénin’ raised 15,000 euros. The remaining 120,300 euros was donated by individuals, companies, and service clubs.
Also, in Benin, our employees generated an income of 16,330 euros. This was in the form of contributions to village wells and equipment sales.
We spent only 2.95% of our revenue on administrative costs in Belgium.
The costs of our team in Benin, including salaries, working equipment, and building costs, amounted to 54,216 euros. This amount is higher than in 2020 because we hired an additional staff member to handle communication. In 2021, logistics costs amounted to 45,050 euros to ship six materials containers.
The two hospitals each received their annual support of 25,000 euros. Our partner AMCES received funding of 30,489 euros, which was spent on Community Health training.
The construction of the Kassoula medical centre (9,709 euros) was interrupted due to problems with the contractor but was resumed in November 2021. Today, the medical centre is finished. Within the framework of the DGD’s multiannual agricultural programme, the contribution to our NGO partner Eclosio amounted to 9,104 euros, and the training farm in Sokounon received 8,493 euros in support. 33,143 euros was spent on the project to combat malnutrition for awareness-raising, detection, and care of malnourished children. Part of this sum (5,391 euros) covered the costs of the Papané hospital for the care of malnourished children. 6,794 euros was spent on education, and 22,072 euros was spent on the Summerschool project and associated scholarships.
58,942 euros was spent on the hygiene programme, including wells in 6 schools, construction of school gardens, installation of teepee taps, and the “sanitary towels for schoolgirls” project. The Aquaponics project with the University of Parakou costs 9,922 euros. The “community vegetable gardens” project started in 2021, and the first cost amounted to 8,384 euros.
The money from the legacy was used to buy the 1.6 ha site in Tinre (32,181 euros) and to pay for some of the equipment (9,919 euros). The legacy is intended to create an incubation centre that supports young entrepreneurs developing new technologies.
The very positive result of 267,169 euros is added to the reserves in anticipation of the autonomy of the incubator project, budgeted at 200,000 euros over three years.
The Foundation’s assets are still more than sufficient to meet its ongoing commitments.
The Foundation ended the year with 286,000 euros in donations. In terms of expenditure, management costs in Belgium represent only 3,17% of the income.
The Foundation successfully closed the year 2019 with 310,000 euros in revenues.
